Donnie Stirling

It is with great sadness that Strathglass Shinty Club and the wider community mourn the passing of Donnie Stirling.

A true stalwart of the Strath, Donnie’s long association with the club spanned several decades, during which he served with distinction as a goalkeeper, assistant manager, and dedicated committee member. Renowned for his ‘kind of style’ as a player from the 1960s through to the 1980s, Donnie was a key member of the historic 1967 Glenmhor Cup-winning squad during a great revival era for the club. He remained a mainstay of the senior team through the 1970s, and was assistant manager when Strathglass captured the MacGillivary North Division Two Trophy in the 1989–90 season.

Beyond his contributions on and off the pitch with the playing field committee, team management and the club committee, Donnie was deeply rooted in the local area. A resident of Tomich until a move in recent years to Moray, he spent his working life with the Forestry Commission and latterly with Tomich Holidays. His family ties to the area ran deep, as his grandfather had worked on Guisachan Estate. Donnie became a valued custodian of local history, sharing invaluable knowledge, records and photographs of the past.

Donnie’s passing is a loss to Strathglass. We extend our condolences to his wife Joyce, and children Laura and Owen.

STIRLING

Peacefully at Speyside Care Home, Aberlour, on 10th July 2026, Donald (Donnie), aged 80 years, latterly of Dufftown, formerly of Tomich, Strathglass. Beloved husband of Joyce and much loved dad of Owen and Laura. Funeral Ceremony on Tuesday 21st July, at 11am in Inverness Crematorium. All welcome to attend and to dress casually. Family flowers only please. Donations for Strathglass Shinty Club and Speyside Care Home may be given at the ceremony.

Brand-new Minibus for Strathglass Shinty Club

On 31 March 2026 the club received delivery of our brand-new minibus. This has been an ambition of the club for several years, so it is fantastic to see it finally become a reality.

It also comes at a time when our community gives thanks and shows our appreciation for the 42 years of service from Bill and Edith Ross who have provided transport to various games over the years. Read article in Inverness Courier

Our minibus will be used across all our teams and has already seen travel to Lewis and Inverary, as well as several local games and tournaments.

A primary intention for the club is to assist the local community. Cannich Bridge Primary School have already made use of the minibus and have booked it for several events already. The children’s delight, excitement and sense of pride was evident as they admired the club’s name displayed on the vehicle, along with its impressive features—from the seatbelts to the lighting.

Moments like this remind us just how fortunate we are to live in such a special community.

Hopefully our minibus will be well used and valued for the next few years.

Its first outing was with our u17s teams to Inverness. Driven by that man of many talents – Roddie.

Hamish MacDougall

The club is saddened to hear of the passing of Hamish MacDougall. Hamish was raised at Carnoch farm in Strathglass and played for the club after reforming in the early 1960s and was part of the Glenmhor Cup winning team in 1967. Our condolences to Hamish’s family from all at Strathglass Shinty Club.

Hamish was the grandson of Eòghann Shìm, Ewen/Evan Macdonald “The Bàrd” who played in the great games between Strathglass and Glenurquhart in 1887 and 1888. His great-grandfather Simon Macdonald was the piper at the inauguration of Strathglass Shinty Club.

MACDOUGALL
Peacefully at Raigmore Hospital on 7th February 2026, after a short illness, Hamish MacDougall, R.I.P., aged 86 years of Muir of Ord. Beloved husband of the late Ellen, much loved father of Andrew, David and the late Mark, father in law of Liran and grandfather of Grace. Funeral Mass on Monday 2nd March at 12 noon in St Mary’s R.C. Church, Beauly, all welcome to attend. Thereafter private interment. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Hamish for Dingwall & District and the Highland Accordion and Fiddle Clubs, may be given at the Mass.

Strathglass receive Get Active Scotland funding

A total of 31 Highland-based sports clubs, including Strathglass Shinty Club, are the first to be awarded funds from the Get Active Scotland initiative, which was launched by Olympic athlete Megan Keith in Inverness in September last year.

Get Active Scotland is a two-year funding partnership between national and local partners – including the London Marathon Foundation, sportscotland, High Life Highland and Glasgow Life. The Fund is one of Scotland’s largest programmes focused on increasing participation in physical activity, particularly for the least-active children and young people, and communities living in areas affected by deprivation and rural isolation.

The variety of sports being supported in this first round of funding – which is administered by High Life Highland – is vast and includes basketball, ice hockey, shinty, football, gymnastics, athletics, golf, tennis, bowling, rugby and surfing.

Darren Reid, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at High Life Highland said: “We were overwhelmed with applications for the first round of Get Active Scotland funding, with some excellent applications all with the aim of helping people to be more active more often. While some clubs will be disappointed that they were unsuccessful this time, we are speaking with representatives to encourage them to try again when applications open again next month. We are very grateful to the London Marathon Foundation for the financial investment in Highland – it is already making a difference to local clubs and organisations and in turn will have a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of people living here.”

Maria Reynard, Strathglass U14 Shinty Coach commented“This funding will enable us to continue to encourage all children regardless of age, stage or ability to access shinty in Strathglass. Shinty is more than a sport to us, it’s a lifestyle, a community and a brilliant opportunity for children (particularly from remote communities like ours) to take part in sport, make friends, feel included, be part of history and most importantly not live in isolation. This money will be fundamental in ensuring we can continue to ensure ALL our children can have access to high quality shinty training, equipment and thrive in an inclusive environment.
